Is DJI’s FPV drone going to be a game changer?

DJI has been a market leader for many of years within the consumer drone market for about five year also producing professional drones which we have come to love and trust. DJI has become a massive organisation dominating the market by over 80% of consumer drones being that of DJI, so it no surprise that they have now jumped on the band wagon with their version of an FPV drone which is soon to be released.

it’s pretty clear that the drone community are excited about the new DJI FPV drone. We can say that as images of the drone have done there rounds around the internet and forums, with leaked pictures raking up thousands of views and re-lighting the interest for FPV drones. Many people seem to be super keen to see this new drone in person. We are, too. And all this has us thinking this product has the potential to be massive.

People love the FPV experience

Back in 2016, DJI launched the original Mavic Pro in New York City. At the same time, DJI gave the public its first look at the first iteration of the DJI Goggles. People where thrilled at seeing that clear image from a Mavic Pro that was hovering a few meters away. People were literally gasping at seeing the image from something in flight (or, in this case, hovering).

Now, if you’re already flying FPV, you’ll know why they were so stoked. It’s simply amazing to see that view. And if the goggles are clear, it really does feel like you’re flying. Who wouldn’t want that?

FPV, easy or Hard?

Learning FPV is not as easy as you may think, FPV does not have the luxuries we have come to love with the DJI Drones, simple things we take for granted such as RTH, Hover in one stop and lets not forget battery life.

Before now if you wanted to fly FPV you would have to be a tech wizard and a expert with a soldering iron, as previous FPV pilots would have to built the drones from the ground up……following limited YouTube tutorials and what information they could find on the internet, That is before you even get the drone up in the air.

It takes practice, though simulator software can help, and it generally involves numerous crashes before you become anywhere close to getting it nailed. Let’s also remember that the majority of the FPV drones out there are made for racing.

And you know what that means. Learning about Betaflight Configurator. Learning about a radio with multiple sub-menus. Backing up and loading settings with Open TX Companion.

Transitioning from consumer drones to FPV

We all want to know can you simply go from a Mavic pro to FPV and the simple answer is NO, unless you are sh*t hot!!! Its advised that individuals looking to get into FPV drones hit the simulators and put in the hours, this is to help people understand how an FPV drone reacts and moves in the air as its a whole new ball game.

DJI pride itself on usability and there’s simply no way that DJI is going to make a product that cant be flown out of the box. This drone is likely to have all the features that most FPV drones don’t have; GPS, RTH, geofencing and more. It’s going to have some modes that are like Tripod — the equivalent of training wheels for the new FPV pilot. We have hoping the Drone will have some of the features similar to that for the Mavic Air 2 and Mini 2 such as quick shots, but personally I think that takes away from FPV drones as the whole reason we love FPV is for those epic dive shots down canyon faces and mountain ridges.

we are hoping that this thing will be set up for optimal flight at the factory. You won’t be plugging it into any third-party software and tuning PID rates or changing any other settings that could potentially send this diving for the earth (or concrete).

We also believe, given that we think some of the more stable modes will be an option, that you will also be able to simply fly this drone Line-of-Sight without goggles. (But really, the goggles make things so much better.)

What to think….

If you know drones and have a passion for them then you know 100% there is a market for a drone that can shoot 4k video and can be easialy controlled by every Tom Dick and Harry. A drone that can give you the same stable shots you’ve come to expect from DJI but is also capable of flying with the camera showing banking, if desired. Mostly, though, the value proposition here is going to be about stability. If you choose, the DJI FPV will be as easy to fly as any other DJI product.

When can we expect DJI’s FPV drone?

The DJI FPV drone appears to be preparing for take-off, with growing leaks and rumours pointing towards a launch in early 2021. Rumours about a DJI FPV (First Person View) drone started back in late 2019, when DJI released its Digital FPV System for adding a high-quality FPV system to existing racing drones.

So far, there hasn't been a precise release date rumoured for the DJI FPV drone. But the closest we have is the suggestion that it will now arrive after Chinese New Year, which takes place on February 12.

That speculation came from regular DJI leaker @OsitaLV on Twitter in a Tweet on December 29, which said "DJI FPV Drone won't arrive this year, maybe some day after Chinese new year".

So hold tight everyone it will be coming to us very soon…..I hope.
